Narad Muni – The Divine Messenger
Who is Narad Muni?
Narad Muni is a divine sage (Rishi) and celestial messenger, known as a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He is one of the Seven Great Rishis (Saptarishis) and is famous for spreading knowledge, devotion (Bhakti), and wisdom across the universe. He is also known as the first journalist in Hindu mythology because of his role in spreading news across different realms.
1. Characteristics and Symbols of Narad Muni
- Veena (Stringed Musical Instrument) → Represents knowledge, devotion, and divine music.
- Chanting “Narayana Narayana” → Always sings and praises Lord Vishnu.
- Travels Freely → Has the ability to move across all realms – Earth (Bhoolok), Heaven (Swargalok), and the Netherworld (Patalalok).
- Messenger of the Gods → Brings messages between gods, sages, and kings.
2. Birth of Narad Muni
- Narad was born from the mind (Manas Putra) of Lord Brahma, meaning he was created directly through divine will.
- In some stories, Narad is said to have been a Gandharva (celestial musician) in a previous life, who was cursed to be born as a human due to his arrogance.
- Through intense devotion to Lord Vishnu, he was liberated and became a celestial sage.
3. Role and Stories of Narad Muni
(A) Spreader of Devotion (Bhakti)
- Narad Muni is credited with introducing Bhakti Yoga (the path of devotion) to the world.
- He wrote the Narad Bhakti Sutra, a sacred text that teaches about divine love and devotion.
(B) The Role in Prahlad’s Story
- Narad Muni played a major role in the birth of Bhakta Prahlad, a great devotee of Vishnu.
- When Queen Kayadhu (mother of Prahlad) was pregnant, Narad taught her about Lord Vishnu’s greatness.
- This is why Prahlad was born as an unshakable devotee of Vishnu, even though his father, Hiranyakashipu, was a demon.
(C) Curse of Vishnu and Birth of Valmiki
- Narad once asked Vishnu how Maya (illusion) works.
- Vishnu told Narad to fetch water from a river. When Narad touched the water, he forgot his divine identity and was reborn as a human.
- After years of suffering, Vishnu finally restored Narad’s memory, and Narad realized the power of Maya (illusion of the world).
- It is said that Narad’s teachings later inspired Sage Valmiki to write the Ramayana.
(D) The Role in Krishna’s Life
- Narad was instrumental in helping Lord Krishna marry Rukmini by advising her to send a secret message to Krishna.
- He also guided the Pandavas during the Mahabharata.

- Bhakti (Devotion) is the highest path to liberation (Moksha).
- Maya (illusion) can deceive even the wisest beings.
- Music and chanting the name of God purify the soul.
